Evening on Broadway
Celebrating the most entertaining musical moments from the big stage
JAMIE ROBERTS
Born in Gainesville, Florida and raised in Daytona Beach, I’m a rare native Floridian! My “on-stage life” began at the age of 5 at the Daytona Playhouse in the musical “Oklahoma!” With 3 sisters and a brother, I figured if I was going to get any attention, I’d better hop on stage and soak it up! At age 12, I saw my first Liza Minnelli concert and the rest is history! From that day on, I knew I wanted to be on the stage! I’m a huge Liza fan! I love the “story songs” that she brings life to. I’m also a big Kander and Ebb groupie. Their music and lyrics are so full of delicious drama! I think the other big influence on my style would be Bette Midler. If Liza and Bette could reproduce, I’d hope to be the result! Since that’ll never happen, I try to recreate what that might look like in my performances!
I was taunted through high school as the nerdy president of the chorus and I attended every music workshop and seminar that was available. In the summer of 1981, I traveled to Penn State to attend a workshop with the late, great Fred Waring! Remember the Pennsylvanians? Well, I was gonna be a Pennsylvanian! Only one problem- by the time I graduated from high school- Fred died! Moving on…I saw the Voices of Liberty at Epcot! Well, I was gonna be a Voice of Liberty! Four years and 5 auditions later, complete with a Musical Theater degree from FSU, I became a member of the Voices of Liberty! I figured I’d work there for a year or so and then move to New York and become a Broadway star! Not so much. I met my husband, got married, and am now the proud mommy of 2 precious boys! ( they think mommy’s a star, so it’s all good)
As a home base, Central Florida has been good to me! I do a lot of local work, make cameo appearances at several Disney stages, and continue to travel the country performing for corporate clients! I’ve recently added 2 one-woman cabaret shows to my repertoire and hope to headline events with this type of showcase! I love to play with lyrics and have written several parodies for these shows. I’d love to tailor client’s needs into new ideas and songs for each event!
When I’m home, I love to cook, sew, decorate and basically live the life of the Domestic Goddess that I am deep down inside! I love to work out, roller-blade, run…all of which is a good thing since I love to cook so much!
